The Wild Canary
Frequently asked questions
About The Wild Canary
What is a Wild Canary retreat?
A week packed full of movement, outdoor adventures, incredible local food, and new best mates, all in the stunning landscape of Gran Canaria. We focus on moving your body for the joy of it; it's not about being the strongest or the fittest. We bring together local guides, incredible Canarian culture, and active days spent cycling, hiking and trying new things, all from our gorgeous island oasis.
Who is The Wild Canary for?
Anyone who loves to move, travel and adventure! You don't need to be an elite athlete or a fitness fanatic, just someone who enjoys staying active and is up for a proper adventure. Whether you're a keen cyclist, an avid hiker, or want a taste of absolutely everything, our retreats are all about energy, attitude and trying new things.
What kinds of retreats do you offer?
We offer three distinct types of retreat to suit your vibe:
- Hiking Gran Canaria: focused on exploring Gran Canaria's dramatic trails and hills.
- Canary Peak Climbs: dedicated tracks and routes for keen cyclists.
- The Everything Retreat: a bit of everything, perfect for those who want a mix of hiking, cycling, Pilates and fun new activities.
How is this different from other fitness retreats?
The Wild Canary isn't a grueling boot camp or a static spa retreat; it's an active, cultural holiday. We focus on how movement makes you feel rather than how hard you can grind. We combine daily movement like Pilates with classic outdoor adventures (hiking and cycling) and bucket-list experiences like beginner surf and salsa lessons. It's important to us that you experience the place you're in, so our retreats are wrapped up in authentic Canarian culture, wine tasting and amazing fresh food.
The retreat experience
What fitness level do I need?
Our retreats are designed to be accessible, it's about moving your body and trying new things, not intensity. You should be comfortable on your feet for gentle hikes through the hills. For the cycling retreat, you should feel confident on a bike, though cleat cycling shoes are not required.
Are activities compulsory?
Nothing is compulsory, you're on holiday! We encourage you to join in because trying new things together is where the magic happens, but if your body needs a rest day by the pool, that's more than okay.
Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. Travelling solo is incredibly common on our retreats. From group hikes and shared meals to trying out salsa steps together, our retreats are designed to be social and welcoming. By Day 2, it'll feel like you've known everyone for years.
Can I bring a friend or partner?
Of course. You can choose to book into your own private room, or book a shared room together.
Is there free time?
Yes. Most days have a balanced mix of structured group activities and free time for you to do as you wish, whether that's chilling on the sun terrace with a book or wandering the local streets.
How many people will be on the trip?
Our retreats are for around 10–15 people. You'll all get to know one another, as well as your hosts at the accommodation, your guides and your local Canarian chefs who can't wait to show you their island.
Accommodation & location
Where are the retreats based?
All of our retreats are based in Gran Canaria, with direct flights to the island from all over the world. The Everything Retreat is based in the historic town of Telde, staying at the beautiful Valtisya, a true oasis of quiet with a sun terrace, a dedicated Pilates reformer studio and a swimming pool. It's perfectly situated: a short walk from the cobbled streets of the old town, a 15-minute drive from the airport, and close to both the beach and the hills for our hikes and cycles.
What are the room options?
You can book your own private room, or choose a shared room. If you're coming with a friend or partner, you can share together; if you're travelling solo and want a shared room, we'll happily partner you up with a fellow guest.
Is there wifi at the villa?
Yes, wifi is available so you can stay connected, share your adventure photos, or check in with home.
What time is check-in?
Check-in is at 3pm across all of our retreats. You'll receive full details of timings and where to go ahead of your retreat to help plan your movements.
